The Cable Deflector “Bumper Guard” is used on all H-60 and S-70 rescue helicopters to prevent the rescue hoist cable from coming in contact with the aircraft surface preventing the cable from fraying over time.
This IRAD was to develop a lightweight, highly durable, low-cost replacement for the existing U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force cable deflectors “bumper guard”. The existing cable deflectors previously in use were manufactured of expensive and long-lead Titanium or heavy steel. The titanium version is expensive and the steel version is heavy. WestWind developed a two piece welded version from stainless steel that could be manufactured at low cost and delivered within six weeks. The redesigned hoist cable deflector provides an inexpensive solution which is highly reliable and light-weight to the customer.
